Subject: Notification and Concern Regarding Enforcement of the Recent Directive by the Federal Government of Somalia
Dear Sir/Madam,
On behalf of the people and the Government of Somaliland, we hereby convey our deep concern regarding the recent directive issued by the Federal Government of Somalia, which states that Somali and Somaliland travelers must obtain visas online or through Somali embassies abroad before being allowed to board flights.
We would like to clearly state the following:
1- This directive does not apply to Somaliland, as Somaliland has its own independent political and legal system.
2- Should Ethiopian Airlines implement this directive, it would seriously undermine the relationship between your esteemed airline and the people of Somaliland.
3- Such implementation may also compel the Government of Somaliland to reconsider the operation and presence of Ethiopian Airlines within Somaliland, particularly in Hargeisa.
4- Somaliland citizens across the world will collectively reject the use of Ethiopian Airlines if such conditions are enforced.
Therefore, we respectfully request that you:
Refrain from enforcing this directive, as it would create unnecessary political and social tensions.
Continue providing your valued services to the people of Somaliland, in line with the longstanding partnership and cooperation between us.
We are confident that Ethiopian Airlines, a company of great repute and credibility, will make a balanced decision that preserves and strengthens the trust and relationship it has with the people of Somaliland.
We wish you continued success and prosperity.
Respectfully.
Ali Behi
