Somaliland's Push for International Recognition Gains Momentum at Dubai Summit by Somaliland’s newly elected President, Abdirahman Mohamed, took a historic step onto the global stage by attending the 4th Governmental Summit which took place in Dubai 11-13 February 2025, a high-profile gathering of over 6,000 participants, including 30 heads of state. His presence marked a pivotal moment in Somaliland’s decades-long quest for international recognition, as he delivered a compelling speech outlining the nation’s democratic progress, developmental achievements, and legal case for sovereignity. In his address, President Abdirahman highlighted Somaliland’s stable governance, including its recent election. He was elected in a process lauded by observers for its transparency.
He emphasized the country’s distinct historical trajectory as a former British protectorate and its three decades of self-governance since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. Notably, he underscored the leadership’s diplomatic credentials, pointing to his own 40 years of public service and the extensive experience of his deputy, both seen as assets in navigating global diplomacy.
