Ahmed Billad: Somali Journalist Expanding Community Reporting Through Digital Media
ERIGAVO, SANAAG REGION, SOMALIA — Somali journalist Ahmed Billad has established a growing presence in digital journalism by reporting on community affairs, education, youth development, and public-interest issues through online platforms.
Based in Erigavo, the administrative capital of the Sanaag region, Billad began his journalism career in 2023. Since then, he has covered a range of local stories, including social issues, education, humanitarian concerns, and community events. His reporting is distributed through TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, where he publishes regular news updates and interviews.
In 2024, Billad launched Billad Media, a digital media platform dedicated to producing Somali-language news and public-interest content. Through the platform, he has expanded his reporting while building an audience across multiple social media channels.
Academic Background
Alongside his journalism career, Billad has pursued higher education in different fields. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Information and Communication (IC) from East Africa University in 2018, followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Sanaag University in 2020.
He is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Peace and Conflict Management at Abareso Tech, with an academic focus on peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and community development.

Billad's journalism focuses primarily on issues affecting local communities. His work includes reporting on education, humanitarian challenges, youth initiatives, health awareness, and community development.
During periods of drought affecting northern regions, he documented the conditions faced by pastoral communities and rural residents, producing reports highlighting the challenges experienced by affected families.
