An Open Statement to Arab Public Opinion
A Message to the Arabs:
Somaliland Does Not Seek Permission ,
It Seeks Justice
Arabs,
You who speak in the name of brotherhood,
in the name of Arabism,
and in the name of shared history,
Today, we address you not with the language of reproach,
but with the language of truth.
Not from a position of weakness,
but from the position of a people who endured,
who survived,
and who refused to be erased from geography and memory.
We speak to you in the name of Somaliland,
not as an emotional cause,
but as a political reality that has existed for more than three decades.
Where Were You?
Before asking us:
"Why does Somaliland seek recognition outside the Arab framework?”
Ask yourselves first:
Where were you when Hargeisa, Burao, and Berbera were bombed by aircraft,
tanks,
and heavy weapons?
Where were your statements when entire families were buried in mass graves, when genocide was committed, when more than 50,000 people were killed, and an entire population was displaced over one million refugees forced into Ethiopia?
Where were your committees,
your mediations,
your consciences,
when an entire people were expelled from history?
We say it clearly:
Somaliland did not leave the Arab fold
it was pushed out by silence and neglect.
34 Years of Knocking on Doors
For 34 years,
we knocked on the doors of Cairo,
we knocked on the doors of Riyadh,
we knocked on the doors of Algiers,
we knocked on the doors of the Arab League,
and on the doors of the Islamic world.
We presented documents, history,
legitimacy,
and irrefutable facts.
But the response was always the same:
Silence,
or support for the party that destroyed our cities and killed our fathers, mothers, elders, and children.
What kind of embrace is this
that does not hear the cries of its own people?
We Are Not Advocates of Discord ,
We Are Advocates of Life
When Somaliland seeks recognition,
it does not do so out of spite toward anyone,
nor as a challenge to anyone,
nor as a betrayal of anyone.
It does so because:
its people hold passports that are not recognized,
its economy is besieged politically, socially, and economically,
its development is obstructed,
and the future of its youth is hostage to a political VETO.
States, O Arabs,
are not governed by slogans.
States are governed by the logic of survival.
The Policy of Double Standards
We ask you honestly:
How is it permissible for stable Arab states, with full sovereignty,
to establish open relations with Israel,
while it is forbidden for a people
without recognition
to search for a window to life?
Is normalization
lawful for the powerful,
and forbidden for the victims?
This logic
is neither moral,
nor political,
nor just.
Why Did Somaliland Accept Any Recognition?
The answer is simple and painful:
Because you left us without alternatives.
When Arabs close all the doors,
they have no right to question those who enter through a window.
We are not selling our identity,
nor changing our history,
nor renouncing our Arab or Islamic belonging.
But we also will not
bury our people in isolation
to satisfy slogans
that never protected us.
Our Message to You
We are not your enemies.
We are not against your causes.
But we are also not a card to be ignored.
If you wish to restore Somaliland’s trust,
begin by acknowledging its pain,
its right to self-determination,
and its existence as a de facto state.
And if you do not,
then do not ask us again about our choices.
Conclusion:
Somaliland does not ask for political charity,
nor diplomatic favors,
nor moral guardianship.
We ask for only one thing:
Justice ,
or leave us the right to search for it ourselves.
Peace be upon those who choose justice,
not silence.
