Erigavo, Somaliland – President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) has formally launched a national peace and reconciliation initiative in the regional capital of Erigavo, aiming to bring healing and unity to the diverse communities of the Sanaag region.
The initiative marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen social cohesion and address longstanding grievances through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Speaking at the launch, President Irro highlighted the constitutional responsibility entrusted to him to safeguard the unity, stability, and dignity of the nation. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to resolving internal divisions through peaceful, inclusive, and justice-driven means.
"Peace is more than the absence of violence,” said the President. "It is the conscious effort to foster mutual respect, shared purpose, and lasting trust among our people.”
He urged all sectors of society—including traditional elders, religious figures, women, youth, and civil society organisations—to actively support and engage with the process, underscoring the importance of collective ownership and sincere participation.
The reconciliation programme is grounded in four guiding principles, which the President described as essential for national harmony:
Dialogue over division – Prioritising honest conversation and shared understanding over hostility or suspicion.
Justice as a foundation – Ensuring fairness and accountability as cornerstones of social stability.
Inclusivity in decision-making – Giving all voices, regardless of background, a seat at the table.
Commitment to national unity – Placing the greater good of the nation above local or clan interests.
As efforts get underway, the government is expected to hold a series of consultations across the region, involving key stakeholders and local communities to ensure the process is both participatory and sustainable.
President Irro’s move has been welcomed by many as a hopeful step towards lasting peace in Sanaag, a region that has historically seen periodic tensions. Observers say the success of the initiative will depend on genuine engagement, trust-building, and the fair implementation of outcomes.
