Abdirizak Khalif Ahmed: A Career Marked by Betrayal and Self-Interest
Khalif's political career spans several administrations.
Abdirizak Khalif Ahmed, once a prominent figure within Somaliland’s political establishment, has become a controversial symbol of disloyalty and political opportunism. Elected as a Member of Parliament in June 2021, he quickly ascended to one of the highest offices in the land – Speaker of the House of Representatives. However, his later actions and public statements have deeply disillusioned those who once saw him as a trusted leader and statesman.
Khalif’s political career spans several administrations. He has served the Somaliland government in multiple roles, including two separate stints as a minister. His fourth official role came when he was elected MP in 2021, and soon thereafter, he rose to the position of House Speaker. These appointments gave him significant influence over Somaliland’s legislative affairs and a platform to shape the country’s democratic development.
However, during the conflict in Laascaanood, located in the eastern Sool region, Khalif's loyalties came under scrutiny. As tensions escalated and violence erupted, he distanced himself from the Somaliland government. His decision to align with his tribal affiliations, who openly opposed Somaliland’s sovereignty, was seen by many as a betrayal of the very state he had long served. Critics argue that Khalif abandoned his constitutional duties in favour of narrow clan interests, undermining national unity at a critical time.
What shocked the nation even further was his own public confession, in which he admitted that he never truly believed in Somaliland as a state. According to Khalif, his involvement in the political system was driven not by ideology or patriotism, but by personal gain. He revealed that his participation was primarily motivated by the salary and benefits he received, effectively branding himself a hypocrite in the eyes of many Somalilanders.
Such statements have caused widespread condemnation. Citizens, political leaders, and commentators alike have criticised Khalif for deceiving the public, exploiting the system, and weakening Somaliland’s legitimacy in a region fraught with geopolitical complexity. His admissions have not only tainted his own legacy but have also sparked broader debates about loyalty, identity, and integrity within Somaliland’s political elite.
In the end, Abdirizak Khalif Ahmed will likely be remembered not for his titles or offices, but for the betrayal of a nation that once placed its trust in him.
