These individuals, captured in the course of conflict between Somaliland

It is with deep concern and profound dismay that we address the degrading and inhumane treatment of prisoners of war—former members of the Somaliland Army—who have been forcibly made to wear tracksuits bearing the Somali national flag. This act represents not only a violation of their dignity and personal beliefs, but also a blatant disregard for the principles of international humanitarian law and the established standards for the treatment of prisoners.

These individuals, captured in the course of conflict between Somaliland forces and groups backed by the Somali Federal Government, are entitled to be treated with respect, regardless of their political or military affiliations. Forcing them to wear the symbols of a state they seceded, and against which they were engaged in armed defence, is a clear attempt to humiliate and psychologically break them. Such actions are disgraceful and unacceptable by any standard.

This conduct stands in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions, which safeguard the humane treatment of prisoners of war and prohibit acts intended to humiliate or degrade them. It is a stain on the conscience of those who claim to act in the name of justice or unity, yet stoop to such dehumanising tactics.

Somaliland has consistently demonstrated its commitment to peace, democracy, and stability in the Horn of Africa. It will remain Somaliland—an independent, self-governing, and resilient nation—regardless of the hostile provocations or campaigns of symbolic violence undertaken by the Somali Federal Government or its allies.

We call upon the international community, humanitarian organisations, and all those who uphold human dignity to denounce this conduct and demand the immediate and respectful treatment of all prisoners in accordance with international law. The people of Somaliland will not be broken by acts of coercion or intimidation, and they will continue to stand firm in their pursuit of justice, recognition, and peace.
