Dulcad was one of the refugee camps where the people of the Republic of Somaliland sought shelter after fleeing the massacres and human rights abuses carried out by the military regime led by Mohamed Siad Barre.

In 1988, Dulcad was considered one of the largest refugee camps in the Horn of Africa, hosting thousands of families living under extremely difficult conditions.

The structure shown below (in the image) was one of the hospital facilities where the Ethiopian government provided medical care to sick refugees in the Dulcad camp, highlighting Ethiopia’s role in delivering humanitarian assistance at the time.

Similarly, the areas of Daroor and Balyalley were also among the locations that left a lasting mark on the people of Somaliland, as they became refuge for many who fled the brutal violence and atrocities of the former military regime.

Today, Dulcad and similar camps stand as a symbol of a painful history, but also of the resilience and rebuilding spirit of the people of Somaliland.
