HADHWANAAGNEWS Congratulations to the people of the Republic of Somaliland, wherever they may be in the
world, especially the diaspora living in Canada. After a long and difficult journey of 34 years,
Somaliland has finally received its first modern international recognition, from the State of
Israel, with many more countries expected to follow.
Israel was also the first country to recognize Somaliland in 1960, following its independence
from British rule. Sixty-five years later, Israel has once again made history by becoming the first
United Nations member state to recognize Somaliland’s independence after its separation from
the Republic of Somalia in 1991.
Since 1991, the Republic of Somaliland has rebuilt itself from the ashes, without formal
international recognition and without access to foreign financial support from institutions such
as the World Bank or the IMF. This journey has not been easy, whether resisting efforts to be
brought back under Somalia’s control or rebuilding a nation of approximately five million people
from the ground up.
On December 26, 2025, the first and most difficult door toward international recognition was
opened by the State of Israel. The Republic of Somaliland is deeply grateful for this bold and
historic step.
Once again, we celebrate this milestone together as Somalilanders. May it lead to a better
quality of life for all and to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Somaliland.
